Am Hof Square Vienna was part of the Roman army camp Vindobona and was uninhabited throughout the Middle Ages. Years later, a castle was built there for the Babenberg Dukes, and the Am Hof Square became the biggest open area in the inner city of Vienna.
In the twelfth century, the square was a place for tournaments, a marketplace and a scene for brilliant singers and poets, such as Reinmar von Hagenau and Walther von der Vogelweide. There are many market stalls where you can purchase unique crafts, books and antiques.
There is a cultural energy to Am Hof Square Vienna that is timeless. Many know the square as the place where Emperor Ferdinand III stood from the balcony of a church and declared the end of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1804.
It is unlikely that you will witness the end of an empire, but Am Hof Square is an important and enjoyable destination for any traveller.
