St. Joseph’s Church on Kahlenberg

History with Incredible Works of Beauty

Welcome to the St. Joseph’s Church (or the Kahlenberg church), loaded with history and incredible works of beauty. Construction of this monumental structure would finish in 1683; however, it was heavily damaged during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna, during which the city was freed by a relief army, still commemorated today.

New construction wasn't completed until 1750. By 1847, the church was in extensive ruin. It was again restored and rededicated in 1852, and today it is in fantastic condition.

St. Joseph’s Church on Kahlenberg Vienna

There is much to see at the St. Joseph’s Church. There is a picture by the Bohemian Baroque painter Johann Peter Brandl with a group of angels painted behind it. The national sainthood of the Polish man is opposite the side entrance. You can also find a bust of Finsterler, mementos from when the Ottomans came in 1683, and the tomb of the Camaldolites where around 70 monks are buried.
