It is traditional for many cities to have a church dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, otherwise known as Heiliger Franz von Assisi in German. The St. Francis of Assisi Church Vienna is a Basilica-style Catholic church designed by the renowned architect Victor Luntz. This fantastic church is one of the most beautiful churches in Vienna. From a distance it looks more like a fairytale castle. The famous picture of Francis of Assisi Church was taken from the pedestrian pathway on the Reichsbrücke (Empire Bridge Vienna) very close to the bridge’s start. Please take a stroll along the Reichsbrücke to see the Church from different angles. This is especially remarkable with the Danube River and the boats in front of the church.
The church was built between 1898 and 1910 in the Rhenish-Romanesque style. It was consecrated in 1913 and is administered by the Order of the Holy Trinity. It is situated next to the Danube, and is home to the Vienna English Speaking Catholic Community (VESCC) who have held weekly masses at the church since moving there in 2009.
One of the most popular parts of the church is the Art Nouveau-style Elisabethkapelle (Elizabeth Chapel). The beautiful chapel is modeled after the Palatine Chapel in the Aachen Cathedral.
Vienna's St. Francis of Assisi Church is located in the south-eastern part of Mexikoplatz (Mexico Square), next to the beginning of the Reichsbrücke. The easiest way to get to St. Francis of Assisi Church from most parts of Vienna is by metro.
