Emperor Charles VI vowed to build the church after a tragic plague epidemic. The church is the final creation of the renowned baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and it was completed by his son Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach in 1739.

The church, consecrated to the patron saint of the Habsburg emperor Saint Charles Borromeo, is a beauty and a wonder. The renovated High Altar shines with its original splendor. The breathtaking frescoes in the cupola, created by Johannes Michael Rottmayr, are awash with marvelous colors, and truly capture the glory of the church's namesake. They can be viewed from up close from a high platform after enjoying a panoramic elevator ride.
