Come see the extraordinarily significant Schiller Monument, located on the Schillerplatz and Schiller Park in front of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna's 1st district. This historical masterpiece was created in honor of the poet Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). One reason for its extreme significance is the fact that up until this point, such monuments were only made for rulers and generals. Schiller was the first artist to be given a representative monument on a public square in Vienna.
The stunning bronze statue of Schiller stands on a granite pedestal, with four figures from the four ages of Schiller's poem "The Song of the Bell" at the corners. Between these figures, there are other poignant allegorical figures symbolizing important concepts such as genius, poetry, science, and the love of ones homeland.
The Schiller monument was funded by donations, drafted through an artist competition, and coordinated by a committee. The poet Anastasius Grün and the writer Ludwig August Frankl von Hochwart were very involved in the project. The Schiller monument was revealed on November 10, 1876. Later, in 1891, another monument was dedicated to Anastasius Grün in a corner of the park and in 1900, opposite the Schiller Monument, a spectacular Goethean monument was erected.
