When traveling through Vienna, you won’t want to miss having a look at the legendary landmark Nails Tree Vienna (Stock im Eisen). This peculiar and intriguing display on the corner of Karntner street features the mid-section of a tree trunk from the Middle Ages standing on a 1.5-meter high pedestal. There are hundreds of nails that have been pounded into the tree’s surface over the course of generations.
The trunk itself is surrounded by an iron ring with a lock dummy. The history of this unique site is that throughout the 18th century, traveling smiths and apprentices hammered nails into the tree for good luck.
Nowadays, the tree trunk is displayed behind a glass encasing and it is nestled, by design, in the corner of the famous Palais Equitable. The Palais Equitable is a beautiful building built by Equitable New York life insurance at the end of the 19th century.
