Karmelitermarkt

Karmelitermarkt is a very old market with quite an interesting history. The neighborhood has always been very multi-ethnic, and nowadays you'll find kosher food sitting right beside Serbian stores and Italian restaurants.

Karmelitermarkt opens at 6AM Mondays-Saturday, and it's open until 7:30PM Monday-Friday and 5PM on Saturday. It is one of the oldest markets in Vienna and receives around 7,500 visitors each week. Some of the many delicious items you will find in this very special market include international cheese specialties, fresh meat, crisp fruit and vegetables, and organic delicacies, such as dairy products. In the surrounding streets, there are even more food stores, snack bars, and nice shops.

The Karmelitermarkt is much smaller and does not have the exotic variety of fruits and vegetables of the extremely famous Naschmarkt; however, this is the preferred shopping venue for second district locals. What a sight it is to see the market thriving on a beautiful, sunny Saturday! Saturday morning is also the time to find food and herbs from organic farms of the nearby region. Pro tip: The earlier you come, the better. The quality and variety tend to taper off.
