The lovely Johannes Gutenberg Monument is located near to the Embassy of Chile and St Stephan's Cathedral and pays tribute to the impact of Gutenberg's introduction of moveable type to Europe. The revolutionary machine produced the Gutenberg Bible, the first important book to be mass-produced and was central to the spread of scientific information, the development of the Reformation, the opening of the Renaissance, and the opportunity for regular people to learn.
The statue of the inventor is bronze and was created by Hans Bitterlich in 1900. The socle, or support, for the statue was designed by Max Fabiani, and is decorated with a coat of arms, various symbols of knowledge, and the Latin proverb, post nubila phoebus, or "After clouds, [comes] sun . . . ".
