One thing makes the Goethe Monument (Goethedenkmal) special is that it is not for a musician or composer. Rather, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was probably Germany's most important writer, offering such works as The Sorrows of Young Werther and Faust, and a most influential thinker in Western philosophy.
The memorial, sculpted in bronze by Edmund Hellmer and unveiled in 1900, features a comfortably-seated and assured-looking Goethe.
