Church Am Hof

History, Beauty, and Architectural Evolution

Come see the phenomenon known as the Church Am Hof, built between 1386 and 1403 by the Carmelite Order. The Church Am Hof is a Gothic church in the first district of Vienna, but has a Baroque facade, due to its long and fascinating history.

In 1662, the widow of Emperor Ferdinand III, Eleonore von Gonzaga, gave orders to re-model the facade of the church. It was rebuilt by the Italian architect Carlo Carlone. You won't want to miss the impressive and significant "Altane", a balcony-like extension that incorporates the entire entrance area. After the dissolution of the Jesuites in the Habsburg lands in 1773, the Church Am Hof (Kirche Am Hof) was made a Garnisonkirche (Military church). Today, the is the main church of the Croatian community in Vienna.

The church is located in the famed Am Hof square, the largest square in the inner city of Vienna. Its history takes us all the way back to the Roman era, when a garrison was built there. In the twelfth century there was a castle built on the Roman foundations, a residence for the dukes of Austria until 1220. The square was originally used for jousting tournaments, but later became a market square.
