Capuchin Church

A Burial Place Like No Other

Experience a crypt like no other. The Capuchin Church (Kapuzinerkirche) houses the Imperial Crypt, the burial vault of three centuries of Habsburgs. This is the final resting place of 12 emperors, 17 empresses, and dozens of archdukes.

Among the many important people buried here are Maria Theresa and Francis Stephen, the parents of Marie Antoinette. The "King of Rome", the ill-fated son of Napoleon and Marie-Louise of Austria, was buried here after his death at age 21. Emperor Franz Joseph was interred here in 1916. As an old man, he died just before the final collapse of his empire. His wife, Empress Elisabeth, was also buried here after her assassination in 1898. Their son, Archduke Rudolf, rests here as well.

It's noteworthy that only their bodies are here. Their hearts are in urns in the Loreto Chapel of the Augustinerkirche and their vital organs are enshrined in a crypt below St. Stephan's Cathedral.
