When visiting the Hofburg Imperial Palace, do not skip the Austrian National Library. Around 300 years ago, Emperor Charles VI had the beautiful building constructed as part of the Imperial Palace, by the same architect who had built Schonbrunn Palace. The building was meant to impress as a superior house of knowledge.
The highlight of the Austrian National Library (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) is the State Hall, with its breathtaking scenery. The cathedral-like oval dome and marble columns are covered by magnificent frescoes. There are 200,000 precious books filling splendid wooden galleries. The walls are lined with wooden staircases on wheels, historic figures sculpted in marble, and several ancient globes.
The Austrian National Library has a series of mostly-Austrian collections, such as the Image Archive and Graphic Collection, the Collection of Historic Maps and the Literature Archive. The Image Archive contains fine portraits and images of the Habsburgs, historic post-WWII Viennese photography, and historic Austrian billboards from 1900 onwards.
