Step into a small piece of religious and musical history! The Church of the Augustinian Friars (Augustinerkirche) was built between 1330 and 1339, and was the starting point for many important events and processions of the imperial family.
The Augustinian church was the home to several imperial family weddings, including the wedding of Empress Maria Theresia with Franz Stefan von Lothringen in 1736, Emperor Franz Joseph I with “Sisi” in 1854, Crown Prince Rudolf with Princess Stephanie in 1881 and the French Emperor Napoleon with the Austrian Princess Marie Louise here in 1810.
One of the most important parts of Augustinian Church was created between 1798 and 1805 by Antonio Canova. The must-see tomb of Archduchess Maria Christine is a masterpiece of classicistic architecture.
And don't forget to visit the Loreto Chapel, where you'll find the Herzgruft (heart burial vault), where several silver urns are the final resting places for 54 Hapsburg rulers’ hearts. The crypt is open on Sunday after Mass. Accessed from the Loreto Chapel, you'll make your way to the Gothic St. George’s Chapel, where the Knights of the Order of George used to convene.
The church is renowned and quite famous for its impact and influence on the world of music. Franz Schubert conducted his Mass in F there. And the church was the home of the world premiere of Anton Bruckner’s Mass in F minor. Today, one can still hear the great masses by Mozart, Haydn and Schubert, and the church hosts regular evening classical music concerts as well.
