Museum Quarter

The Museum Quarter, originally built for imperial court stables, has grown and developed over the centuries, and now includes a phenomenal mixture of Baroque and contemporary architecture. The ground-breaking ceremony was in 1998 and the Quarter was finally opened in 2001. The area is accessible all day long and is entirely free. It's just about the best place you can find to simply hang out and relax.

The Museum Quarter is all about its incredible architecture, filled with both the historical and the contemporary. The area, originally drawn up by famous Austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, includes such important features as the Hofburg, the New Castle, and the Museum of Art and Natural History. Later the winter riding hall was added to give the main courtyard an even greater feel. The new buildings, built by the Austrian architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner, create a space that impressively blends the existing historical buildings with contemporary architecture.
