While visiting the Parliament, be sure to check out the nearby Monument of the Republic. The monument commemorates the establishment of the Republic of Austria on 12 November 1918.
This famous monument, created by several extremely talented sculptors, is made of three busts of historically important Social Democrats each resting on a pedestal. Behind them are three rectangular granite blocks and the inscription "The memory of the establishment of the Republic on 12 November 1918". The words "establishment of the republic" are written larger than the others. The monument stands on a slightly raised platform. Every year on 12 November, the sculpture is decorated with a lovely flower arrangement.
The inauguration of the monument took place on 12 November 1928, on the tenth anniversary of the proclamation of the First Republic. For various historical reasons, the sculpture was stored away for some time, but was rebuilt and restored for the 30th anniversary in 1948.
