Johann Andreas von Liebenberg was mayor of Vienna for a short time in the 1680s after his battle against the Bubonic Plague, but is more recognized for his organization of civil service during the Second Turkish Campaign forces in 1683.
The Liebenberg Monument was ordered in 1887 from architect Franz Neumann and sculptor Johan Silbernagel. It is located in Vienna’s first district, opposite the University of Vienna.
The nine-meter high red granite obelisk rises from a stepped base in its own lawn area. At the top of the pillar stands the goddess of victory, and at the base, a portrait of Liebenberg is paid homage by two angels. The monument is guarded by a life-sized bronze lion firmly holding down a copy of the Turkish insignia.
