Lichtental Church

For the Love of Music and Architecture

For music lovers and Baroque architecture enthusiasts, you should definitely visit the Lichtental Parish Church. The church, with elements of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, is also known as the Schubertkirche (Schubert Church), because famous composer Franz Schubert was baptized there in 1797. He would also write several compositions for use in the church, including his first mass for the centenary, first performed on 25 September 1814.

The church's construction was initiated by Emperor Karl VI. Previously, there had been a chapel dedicated to St. Anna, but the Emperor wished for something more grandiose. In 1712, the Emperor hired two of Vienna’s most famous and accomplished architects to design the church. The construction took more than 18 years. The elegant and lovely church would finally open in 1730.

There was massive growth in the church's district, later necessitating further expansion of the facilities. In 1769, Empress Maria Theresia gave orders for the refurbishment. The church's fame would come several years after that. In 1797, Franz Schubert was born and baptized in the church. He grew to become a great composer and performed many times at the Lichtental Parish Church. Many of his compositions were first performed there, as well.

In 1827, the church gained a second tower and its current look. In 1996, the interior of the Lichtentaler Pfarrkirche was refurbished, followed by the exterior in 1999. In 2006, the church gained a new, modern altar. Also noteworthy are the Baroque side altars containing paintings by famous artists such as Leopold Kupelwieser.
