Come visit the Altes AKH or Old General Hospital. The Altes AKH stems back to the 17th century. After the Second Siege of Vienna and the defeat of the Turkish army, there were many injured and crippled soldiers. A wealthy doctor donated a large stretch of land, which would ultimately be transformed into a military hospital. This would later serve as a teaching venue for the University of Vienna, and in 1998 the campus was turned into a commercial area where students love to gather and mingle in the evenings.
Every Christmas the Altes AKH becomes an amazing Christmas village. You will be delighted by Christmas, festive music, and brilliant and enchanting lights. The star-shaped Christmas village has around 60 festively decorated cabins, each one more exciting than the last.
This particular Christmas market is smaller and calmer than some of the other Christmas markets in Vienna, but it has a very unique flair you will definitely want to experience. Due to the hospital setup, there is very little noise and distraction from the business of the city. The fun is contained and concentrated.
There is something for all ages at this phenomenal market. Children will be in awe of the beautiful children’s carousel and the adorable Christmas railway. Adults will delight in the wide array of presents, colorful Christmas decorations, and the countless delectable treats. There are wine cabins and multiple restaurants, an ice skating rink, and tons of opportunities to socialize in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. There's something for everyone!
