Stadttempel

Still Standing, Strong and Beautiful

For a unique and precious historical and visual experience, you should visit the Stadttempel in Vienna. In the early 19th century, the Jewish community of Vienna was given permission to build their synagogue. However, they needed to do so in a manner so it would not be visible from the street. The synagogue was built in a Neo-Classical style, as designed by the architect J. Kornhausel. Then, the building was considered one of the city’s most innovative structures. Other synagogues in Europe would even be modeled after it.

The synagogue building was built as an oval structure with this Hebrew inscription on the entrance: “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise”. It is surrounded by twelve columns supporting a women’s gallery. The ceiling is a majestic sky-blue and the Holy Ark stands as a glorious Baroque structure, beneath the Tablets of the Law inside a golden sunburst.

The consecration ceremony was held on April 9, 1826. This included musical splendor, with cantor Solomon Sulzer performing an arrangement written by the composer Franz Schubert. The synagogue became Vienna's first official Ashkenazi synagogue.

The synagogue was renovated in 1895 and in 1904. The inside of the synagogue was damaged in 1938 during Kristallnacht; however, it was the only synagogue in Vienna not destroyed! Everything was repaired in 1945 and there was a beautiful re-dedication ceremony in 1946. Stadttempel has since been declared an historic site and still functions to this day as the central synagogue of Vienna's Jewish Community.
