A famous, must-see museum when visiting Vienna is the outstanding MUSA (Museum Startgalerie Artothek). This phenomenal site hosts the collection of the Cultural Affairs Department of the Vienna City Administration. You are presented with fine works of contemporary Austrian artists, and the best part is it's absolutely free. MUSA is city run, but still a fantastic place to check out local up-and-coming artists in the city.
MUSA museum contains approximately 30,000 objects by about 4,500 artists. The objects were acquired by the Department of Culture as part of a comprehensive support program since 1951. The museum expertly provides an historic cross-section of Viennese art since 1945, and covers a wide variety of art across multiple genres. It represents an impressive gathering of Viennese art from the last several decades and it is by far the largest collection of its kind in Austria.
The museum encompasses a vast 600 square meters with cutting-edge storage facilities. The exhibition area displays the gallery’s collection, while also including constantly changing exhibitions and the intelligently integrated "Start Gallery", which enables young and up-and-coming artists to enter the art market. This gallery is a phenomenal space serving as a launch pad for young local talents. The museum also contains Artothek, the stock of graphic artworks available on loan from individuals.
MUSA brilliantly showcases Vienna’s arts community and its diverse members. A rotating jury of distinguished Viennese artists and art professionals recommend the acquisitions. These decisions are based on the principles of artistic excellence and stylistic breadth.
