Are you interested in science, anatomy, and expanding your mind? We have the perfect place for you to visit! The Collection of Anatomical Pathology (Narrenturm Wien) in the Madhouse Tower at the University Campus is an amazing opportunity for scientists and others interested in medicine and the human mind.
This iconic edifice is replete with intrigue and a very unusual history. The physical structure dates back to 1784, and it is an extremely important monument of late 18th century medical history; however, it was originally a mental asylum until 1866. This building was one of the first such public institutions in continental Europe and thus received its nickname the "Madhouse" Tower, due to its inmates. Others refer to the building as the so-called Fool's Tower. This well-known structure, expertly designed by Isidore Canevale, is easily identified by its unique round structure. This fascinating and interesting tower stands an imposing five stories tall and has a circumference of 125 meters. There are 28 rooms per floor and an octagon on the roof.
Since 1971, the use of the tower has been changed immensely. It has since become home to the Collection of Anatomical Pathology. The Collection houses approximately 45,000 objects, and it is considered the largest collection of pathological preparations in the world. If you visit this unique site, you will also learn about how the enlightened monarch Emperor Franz Joseph II commissioned the build, and the role the hospital and asylum played in 18th and 19th century Vienna. It is truly an exciting learning experience!
