Beethoven’s Connection to Vienna is a Powerful One

You will not want to miss a trip to the Beethoven Museum (Museo de Beethoven Wien). The museum is based upon the latest scholarship about the life and works of one of the most famous and important classical composers. In 1787, Ludwig van Beethoven first came to Vienna to study with Mozart. He lived in the city from 1792 onwards, so his life and works are strongly connected to Vienna.

Beethoven chose the location because of its healing baths to attempt to cure or alleviate his hearing disorder. These baths were fed by a mineral-rich spring, and their healing qualities attracted many prominent visitors. In this location, in 1802, Beethoven wrote the “Heiligenstädter Testament”, a letter addressed but never sent to his brother, in which he speaks of his despair about his hearing loss. It's also here where he composed several of his most famous works, including the Piano Sonata Op. 31, No.2 ("The Tempest").
