Mariensaule

Dedicated to an Outside Military Victory During the Thirty-Years War

The bronze and marble Mariensaule stands in the Hof, one of Vienna's most important squares. It was based on a work that stands in Wernstein that Emperor Ferdinand III raised to his victory over the Swedish forces during the Thirty-Years War.

The monument in Am Hof Square has a large marble base, on which stand four armor-clad cherubs at war against beasts representing war, heresy, hunger, and the Plague. In their midst is another support, richly decorated with bronze plaques, and from which rises a black column that supports the figure of Mary standing on a dragon defeated by the golden arrow through its neck.
