Palais Equitable

One Location, Two Unique Sites

While walking near Stephansdom, you're bound to be intrigued and have more than a few questions when you encounter the Palais Equitable. This beautiful building was built by Equitable New York life insurance at the end of the 19th century, and it is distinguished as one of the rare palaces that has never been inhabited by a member of the aristocracy.

The building has a gorgeous, impressive facade and the roof is decorated with an American eagle. The name of the Palace comes from its creator, and the eagle on the roof is because of its proud American heritage.

The inside of the building is equally amazing, with a breathtaking marble and granite staircase hall, a courtyard decorated with tiles and majolica, and the vestibule ceiling majestically designed by Julius Victor Berger.

The building is located at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz 3. The plaza is named after its most famous site, and the building intentionally incorporates the Stock im Eisen into its design.

Palais Equitable Vienna

Stock im Eisen

You certainly won’t want to miss having a look at the legendary Stock im Eisen (staff in iron). This fascinating display features the mid-section of a tree trunk from the Middle Ages with hundreds of nails that have been pounded into it over the course of generations.

Throughout the 18th century, traveling smiths and apprentices would hammer nails into the tree for good luck. Nowadays, the tree trunk is prominently displayed behind a glass encasing. It is nestled in the corner of the Palais Equitable. The pair makes for an unforgettable visual experience!
