Leopoldsberg

Vienna’s Most Famous Hill

A trip to Vienna is incomplete without visiting the inimitable Leopoldsberg. Towering over the Danube and the city, this is perhaps Vienna’s most famous hill. Leopoldberg’s most important landmark is the church that stands at the top and from which you can get a clear view of Vienna below. Construction of the Leopoldsberg Church began in 1679, with expansions and renovations over the years. Nearby you'll find a memorial to those Austrians who returned home from captivity after World War II.

Leopoldberg forms the northeastern corner of the Alps and is covered with beech forests. Through the centuries, the mountain was bare of forest and used for vineyards and grazing. It therefore had the name “Bald Hill” until 1693 when the baroque church was built on top. Leopoldsberg can be reached by car or by bus.  The leisurely hike up the paved path is a favorite Sunday excursion for many people.
