The oldest zoo in the world

Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo, or in German “Tiergarten Schönbrunn”, was founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine, and it is the oldest existing zoo in the world. It has been recognized as the best zoo in Europe four times in a row and it is one of the most modern zoos in the world.

Vienna Zoo - Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Unique animals, such as panda babies and elephants, attract more than 2 million visitors to the Schoenbrunn Zoo every year. More than 700 species of animals live at the zoo, including highly endangered animals such as Siberian tigers and koalas.

The combination of monument protection and contemporary animal husbandry add to the charm of the Vienna Zoo. Visitors leave the zoo inspired and better aware of the importance of animal protection.

Coming to the Vienna Zoo allows visitors to see animals from all different types of climates, including from the Arctic, the rainforest, and the African Savannah. Tiergarten Schönbrunn is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn.
