The history of Freyung markets goes way back to the Middle Ages, when there was a weekly horse market. Later, in the 18th century, they created a Viktualienmarkt (food market), which specialized in fruits, vegetables and herbs.
Nowadays, Freyung is famous for the Biobauernmarkt Freyung (Organic farmers market Freyung), and you should most certainly come and experience it for yourself. The heart and soul of Vienna's organic marketplace has been on the Freyung for 20 years.
The market, which occurs on specific days, contains around 20 market stalls offering their fantastic organic food items. The excellent variety includes organic meat, fish, baked goods, honey, wine and cheese, and also includes incredible natural cosmetics products.
Other items that are available are handicrafts and different wicker goods. And don't forget to enjoy some organic delicacies at the Schanigärten, the perfect place to relax and enjoy a coffee with some tasty apple strudel.
