Due to its traffic significance, the Taborstraße became the main street of Leopoldstadt, which was incorporated into the city of Vienna in 1850, and is still one of the most important commercial streets in the second district. Before the 19th century, Taborstrasse was well known for its importance for long-distance traffic. With the creation of other train stations and the institution of various regulations, Taborstraße would be forever changed. Traffic began to shift to other modes of transport and other routes; however, the Taborstraße would experience an extremely strong increase in population.

In recent years, the area has quickly become one of the hippest neighborhoods in Vienna. It is a fantastic location for the new residents, and the more established ones as well. There is a diverse local scene, which draws its liveliness from the colorful population mix. The area welcomes many artists, and their studios create a lovely focal point for the neighborhood.

You'll want to check out the beautiful Karmelitermarkt, which makes the local shopping district very unique. There are food choices from all over the world, a special farmer's market, and a weekly antique market, all contributing to the delightful mood of the area. The many shops and restaurants also help liven up the area and ensure quite a high quality of life.

For observant Jewish visitors to Vienna, there's no better place to be than Taborstraße. There is an active and helpful Chabad House and two kosher restaurants. Bahur-tov is a delicious grill restaurant and the Prego Pizzeria is a dairy restaurant with a wide variety of food options and a lovely kosher bakery.
