Natural History Museum Vienna

A Bridge to a Storied Past

The Natural History Museum Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum) opened in 1889, at the same time as the Museum of Art History. The museum is enormous and houses over thirty million artifacts. The Natural History Museum’s primary scientific focuses are the origins of the solar system, evolution, and prehistoric traditions and cultures.

Natural History Museum Vienna

The architecture of the museum is itself an artifact worth visiting; the ornate furniture, decorations, and painted ceilings are beautiful and old-fashioned. The museum’s exhibits are world-renowned.

There are many taxidermy specimens that make it easy and enjoyable to learn about an eclectic array of animal species.

The museum also has the world’s largest collection of meteorites in its Meteorite Room. Personally, my favorite section was the planetarium and its state-of-the-art technology that facilitates a better understanding of astrology and space. With its many exhibits and simulations, this museum is an incredible stop during any trip to Vienna.
